Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Nancy Cassady was born on September 5, 1917, the daughter of Raymond W. and Flora E. (Whiting) Cassady in Whiting, Iowa. She graduated with the class of 1935 from Mapleton (Iowa) High School. She found great joy in planning many class reunions. She received her B.S. Degree from the University of Minnesota in 1939. She earned a physical therapy endorsement from Northwestern University in 1940.
In 1941, Nancy entered the United States Army. She was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood (Missouri) where she trained other enlistees as physical therapists. She remained there until after the war in 1945.
Nancy enjoyed her years as a children’s physical therapist. She worked six years in the crippled children’s school in Jamestown, North Dakota and ten years with the University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital School in Iowa City-where she lived from 1954 to 1996. In 1996, Nancy moved to the Northcrest Community Living Complex in Ames and lived there until her passing.
Nancy’s great love was her Iowa Hawkeyes—especially the football team! She attended many games at Kinnick Stadium. Through her entire life she enjoyed her summers at Monona Point on Lake Elizabeth near Spicer, Minnesota. After her parents’ cottage, ”Iowana”, burned down in 1945, Nancy built her own cottage on the same spot in 1948. She loved her cottage and hosted many ‘happy hours’ there with the relatives.
Nancy died September 9, 2013 at the Northcrest Health Care Unit in Ames at 96 years of age.
Nancy is survived by her sister, Betsy L. Nims; five nephews; three nieces; six great-nephews; three great-nieces; one great-great nephew; and two great-great nieces.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; an older brother, Raymond W. Cassady, Jr.; her brother-in-law, Robert M. Nims; and a great-niece, Nancy Nims.
Burial will be at a later date in the Whiting (Iowa) Cemetery.
Memorials may be donated in Nancy’s name to St. John’s Episcopal Church or Northcrest in Ames.
