Sharon Kay Britten, age 61, of Fulton, MO formerly of Zearing, IA passed away unexpectedly July 7, 2013, at her residence. She was born in Eldora, IA on May 2, 1952, the youngest of four children born to Harold and Ruth Britten.
Sharon graduated from NESCO High School in 1970. She attended the University of Missouri, Columbia. Sharon earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a minor in psychology graduating cum laude from Methodist College, Fayetteville, NC in 1974.
Sharon’s professional life in public relations and communications included being employed as Communications Officer, Missouri Senate, Jefferson City, Missouri and Director of Alumni Relations, Linn Technical College, Linn, Missouri. Sharon received professional recognition by creating seven publications produced for Missouri Division of Commerce and Industrial Development winning awards in interstate competition.

Sharon was also employed by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Fulton State Hospital as Co-Director of Patient Relations. In her role of client advocate Sharon was selected to speak at a conference in Bethesda, Maryland as part of a Seclusion/Restraint Steering Development Team. Sharon was part of a team from Fulton State Hospital organizing clients to be involved in a partnership in treatment and giving them a voice in what happens at the hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Sharon was a trained and licensed facilitator for Procovery Circles. As a facilitator, she provided a forum for people with mental health issues to share personal experiences in an emotionally safe environment thus helping each other find hope and skills to reach their own best path.

Sharon was a gifted writer with a witty sense of humor delivered with impeccable timing; a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She enjoyed the performing arts as well as singing and playing music with her family and friends.

Sharon is survived by her brothers, Jerry Britten (Leola) of Zearing; Alan Britten (Karen Combs) of McCallsburg; sister-in-law, Bonnie Britten, Seattle, Washington; twelve nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and great nephews.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Kent Britten.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. also at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Zering, IA Burial Lincoln Township Cemetery in Zering, IA.

It is suggested memorial donations be sent to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Central Iowa, 416 Douglas, Suite 203, Ames, IA 50010.

Arrangements will be made by Fredregill Funeral Home, Zering, IA.
