From Stevens Memorial Chapel obituary, Ames, Story County, Iowa:

Jennings "Cap" Morris Capellen was born November 17, 1927 at Clearwater, Nebraska to Herman Ollie and Viola Smith Capellen and was the oldest of four children. As a baby, he moved with his family to the sand hills of Nebraska just south of Thedford where they built a sod house in which they lived for seven years. He was baptized by immersion in a farm pond near Lamoni, Iowa, as a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints. Cap graduated from Thedford High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army from February 1946 until March of 1947 which included service in Korea. After completing his tour of duty Cap worked his way through college graduating from Graceland Junior College (now University) with an AA degree. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Technology from Iowa State College (now University) in 1958.

Cap met the love of his life while at a dance at the Ames American Legion and was married on the most romantic day of the year, February 14, 1958 to Georgia Rose Rasmussen. To this happy union were born a daughter, Diane and a son, Steven.

After holding many and varied jobs from 1947 until 1951 Cap began work at the Atomic Energy Laboratory at Iowa State University where he retired on June 30, 1990 after almost 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Boone Sportsmen's Club, Iowa Wildlife Federation, Ames Wildlife Federation (co-founder) and the International Mass Spectrometry Association. Cap was known and loved by many. He hosted many foreign visitors while holding his position at Iowa State. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. Cap played a mean game of cribbage and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles to challenge his mind.

Cap was preceded in death by his parents, brother Clifford, sister Ollie and a sibling in infancy. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Georgia; his daughter Diane Richardson of Scotts Bluff, NE; his son Steven (Cindy) Capellen of Boone; grandchildren, Jason Hovick of Scotts Bluff, NE and Adrienne (Bryan) Ady of Oshkosh, NE; great-grandchildren, Tara Hovick and Annette Ady; and a large extended family.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday evening, July 23rd, from 5 – 7 PM at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th Street, Ames. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Iowa Wildlife Federation. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.StevensMemorialChapel.com.
