Wilma L. Ose, 90, of Story City, passed away at Israel House Hospice in Ames on July 12, 2013 surrounded by her family. A private family graveside service with military honors is planned.
Wilma was born December 18, 1922 in Middletown, Ohio, the second of four children of Russel and Priscilla Aylstock. She graduated from Lemon – Monroe High School in Monroe, Ohio and attended business school before joining the US Marine Corp in 1943. It was while stationed in San Diego that Wilma met her future husband and love of her life, Joel Ose, on a blind date at a beach party. Wilma arrives in Story City, Iowa by train with their first born baby to her new in-laws, while her husband was in the Pacific theatre during WWII. Story City has been her home since that day.
Wilma spent the years while her children were young as a stay-at-home mother and housewife. She worked many years at the Story City Cleaners and later at the Ose Hardware.
Although her children and later her grandchildren were the focus of her life, she still had time for activities with the American Legion Auxiliary, a bowling league, playing in a monthly bridge group for over 50 years, and being active at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
In her later years, she also volunteered with RSVP and Bethany Manor, attended weekly senior luncheons and had regular get-togethers with her best girlfriends. Wilma loved to watch tennis, golf, was an Iowa State basketball fan, makes kringla for her grandchildren, and was famous for her “cozies” and embroidered tea towels and pillowcases. A few years ago, she was fortunate as a WWII veteran to go on the honor flight to Washington DC to visit the war memorials, one of only three women veterans on her plane.
Wilma traveled extensively via planes, trains, automobiles and buses to visit her family throughout The United States. She was always up for new adventures.
Wilma is survived and deeply loved and missed by her 5 children: Alan (Viola) Ose of Cheyenne, WY; Mike (Kathy) Ose of Story City; Diana Bowers of Branson, MO; Vicki (Denny) Cook of Branson, MO; and Jil (Marc) Ipsen of Story City. She also leaves 10 grandchildren: Chrissy Renfro and Karen Rogers; Julie and Mandy Stoffel; Jessica Kovochich, Mitch Ose and Kim Smith; Jody Campidilli and Samantha Cook; and Zac Ose. All are better people from having known and loved their Grandma. She has 17 great-grandchildren (and one on the way) and 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as a host of step grandchildren and others she has “adopted” and loved as her own. She is also survived by one sister, Shirlie Maury of Laurel, IN and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joel; a brother and sister and one grandchild.
Words cannot express how much her family will miss this truly amazing lady, who kept her sense of humor to the very end. Mom, it was one hell of a ride.
