From Fredregill Family Funeral Home obituary, Zearing, Story County, Iowa:

Daniel Phelan, 80 of Zearing, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Mary Greeley MedicalCenter in Ames. Visitation will be on Monday, April 12, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 8 p.m. at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Zearing. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, April 16that 10 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Graveside services will follow at HolyCross Cemeteryin rural Farrar, Iowa.

Daniel B. Phelan was born to Daniel G. and Madge (Byal) Phelan in Des Moineson December 4, 1932. He attended and graduated from McCallsburg High Schoolwith the class of 1951. After high school Daniel joined the Army where he served his country during the Korean Conflict. After returning home from the service he worked for seven years at the Zearing cheese factory and then 50 years as a farmer. On June 21, 1958 he married Jeanne Smith at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines. Daniel was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, and the Story-Marshall Knights of Columbus.

Those left to cherish Daniel’s loving memories is his wife of 54 years, Jeanne; his children, Tim (Janice) Phelan of Lee Summit, MO, John (Christina) Phelan of Eatonville, WA, Bill Phelan of Zearing, IA, and Mike (Cindy) Phelan of Story City, IA, Anne (Jerry) McDonald of Imogene, IA; Nine grandchildren, Molly Pesce, Maggie and Kelly Phelan, Gabi Torgerson, Madi and Sophi Phelan, Rachel, Sarah and Matthew Phelan; great grandson Gavin Trumbull brothers Mike Phelan of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Pat (Mary) Phelan of Grand Island, NB; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel G and Madge (Byal) Phelan ; and sister, Carmella Skinner.
