Helen Frances Phares
July 16, 1924 - June 13, 2013

Helen Frances Phares, 88 of Nevada died on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Story County Senior Care. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18 at the First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th Street in Nevada with Deacon Brenda Hobson officiating. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Helen was born on July 16, 1924 in St. Anthony to John N. and Bernice L. (Hill) Turner. She was a graduate of Colo High School and received a rural teacher's degree from UNI. On February 14, 1948, Helen married Roscoe Ceicle Phares in Colo. She was a farm housewife and also worked at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames. Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada, United Methodist Women, United Methodist Choir, Quilters, and Bithiah Circle. She was awarded the Story County Mother of the Year in 1975. Helen enjoyed embroidering, quilting, cooking, and being with her grandchildren.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Bev (Steve) Nelson of Decorah and Lorry (Norman) Harrison of Nevada; a son Craig (Pam Gerlach) Phares of Gilbert; eight grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roscoe on February 11, 1967 and was buried on their 19th wedding anniversary, daughter Barbara Bromann on May 22, 2004, a grandson Aaron Nelson, two brothers Forrest and Arthur Turner, 2 sisters Vivian Nelson and Isabelle Gerke.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 17 with the family present from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada.

A memorial fund has been established in loving memory of Helen.
