Bernice H. Sowers
November 18, 1914 - May 30, 2013

Bernice Helen Sowers, 98, passed away on May 30, 2013 at the Greene County Hospital in Jefferson, Iowa. Funeral service will be Monday June 3, 2013, 1:30 p.m. at the Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Story City Cemetery.

Bernice Helen Sowers was born on November 18, 1914 to Oscar Cyrus and Mary (Rognehaug) Anfinson in Dilke, Saskatchewan, Canada. She graduated from the high School and went to college for one year. She married Walter Sowers on October 12, 1938 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She was a farm wife and homemaker. She lived in the Story City area from 1938 to 2006 when she moved to Jefferson to be near her daughter. She was a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Story City and a volunteer at Heartland Congregate meals for over 30 years. Bernice enjoyed collecting stamps, coins, thimbles and spoons; as well as sewing, genealogy, feeding the birds, flower gardening, keeping records, playing cribbage and watching on TV her favorite teams: Iowa State, Iowa and the MN Vikings.

She is survived by: son, Larry Sowers (Janette) of Des Moines, IA and daughter, Judy Kolbe (Sonny) of Bagley, IA; two grandchildren, Cheryl McCann and Donna Meyer (Jason); three step grandchildren; one great granddaughter, Christina McCann-Hanson; seven step great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter, Cali Lynn McCann.

Preceded in death by: her parents; husband Walter (8/5/1972); brother, Earl Anfinson and three sisters, Lillian Ekdahl, Merle Olsen and Marjorie Anfinson; and great granddaughter, Angela McCann.
