Vera W. Larson
April 8, 1924 - May 26, 2013Vera W. Larson was born April 8th 1924 in Beamister, England. She served in the British Royal Air Force during World War II. She was an airplane mechanic and flew Barrage Balloons to protect against bombers. On July 13, 1945, Vera met and married Jens W. Larson who was serving in the American Army. Vera came to the United States separately with many other British brides on the Queen Mary.
Vera raised four children and worked at Mary Greeley Hospital in the dining services as well as kept the books for the family electrical business. She loved to garden, read, and never missed her daily tea with her neighbors and English friends. She enjoyed teaching her grandkids to knit and challenged them to difficult puzzles and a friendly game of scrabble. She was an active participant in the English club and enjoyed volunteering at the Ames Public Library and working at the Ames voting booths.
Vera died on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Bethany Manor in Story City at 89 years of age.
Vera is survived by three sons, Paul (Linda) Larson of Ames, David Larson of Marshalltown, and John (Julie) Larson of Ames; a daughter Donna (Tom) Fuller of Rockford, IL; a brother Eric Masters of England, and a sister Edna Rugg of England, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sister in-law Helen Jehring and many nieces and nephews.
Vera is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jens W. Larson, sister Brenda Dean, sister-in-laws Nettie Armstrong, Violet Olsen, Lenore Evjy, Annie Hein, and brother-in-laws, Arnie Larsen, and Carl Larsen.
A memorial fund has been established for the Ames Public Library.
