MARTHA S. ERICSON, October 1, 1901-October 30, 1993

Martha S. Ericson, 92, of Story City, IA, formerly of Hawarden, died Saturday, October 30, 1993, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Services were held Monday, November 1, at the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City, and a funeral service was held Tuesday, November 2, at the First Baptist Church in Hawarden with the Rev. George Henriksen officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation was Monday, November 1, at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mrs. Ericson was born October 1, 1901, in Story City, the daughter of John and Helen Sydness. She graduated from the Story City High School and the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught school for three years at Hawarden High School prior to her marriage to Elmer H. Ericson on June 14, 1927, in Story City. They made their home in Hawarden where she taught the Goodwill Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was an active member of the Hawarden Library Board for over 20 years, by which she showed her joy in reading and concern for her community. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years and served as its president.

Elmer died on September 11, 1975. She resided in Hawarden until 1979 when she moved to Story City. She entered the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City in 1986.

Survivors include two sons, John and his wife, Joy, of Wilmington, DE; and James and his wife, Patricia, of Milwaukee, WI; a sister, Millie Carpenter of Story City; five grandchildren, Linda Hill, James Robert Ericson, Eric Ericson, Amy Ericson, and Martha Ericson; and four great-grandchildren, Kristin Hill, James Hill, Eleanor Ericson, and William Ericson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister, Sophie Lund.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City or to the First Baptist Church in Hawarden.
