George W. Atkins (1871-1951)

George W. Atkins, 80, former employee of the State Bureau of Investigation, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. B. Brattebo, following a lingering illness.

Mr. Atkins had been living at the home of his daughter for the past 15 years. Prior to his association with the State Bureau, Mr. Atkins had been county auditor and sheriff of Harrison county.

Besides his daughter, he is survived by a son, Glenn W. Atkins of Clear Lake and two brothers, Simon Atkins, Council Bluffs, and Isaac Atkins of Albert City. His wife died 2 years ago and his only sister died a week ago at Council Bluffs.

Funeral services were held yesterday at the Larson-Peterson funeral home and at 2 p.m. in Grace church. Officiating at the services was Rev. James E. Smith, assistant pastor of the University Christian church, Des Moines, of which Mr. Atkins was a member. Rev. W. D. Winter, pastor of Grace church, assisted. Interment was in the Story City cemetery.
