Pioneer McCallsburg Woman Laid to Rest

Special to the Journal.
McCallsburg, Oct. 5--The funeral of Mrs. Martha Hanson was held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church which was filled to capacity. The service was in charge of Rev. J. R. Browne. The music was furnished by a ladies quartette, Mrs. F. E. Nail, Mrs. A. M. Finnie, Mrs. W. H. Reid and Miss Catherine Craig, who sang, "It is well," "Sometime We'll Understand", and "Some Sweet Day." The pall bearers were O. J. Solyst, Tom Thorson, B. J. Ritland, Chas. Menzel, Tom Larson and A. J. Baumgardner, long time friends of the family. The Flowers were cared for by Mrs. E. O. Dillin and Mrs. A. G. Graves. Bruial was made in the family lot in the Warren township cemetery. Martha Anderson was born in Marsailles, Ill., July 1, 1850 and died Sept. 28 at the home of her son, A. C. Hanson in McCallsburg.

Mrs. Hanson's girlhood days here spent in Marsailles, where she was united in marriage to Peter C. Hanson of Ottawa, Ill., on Dec. 13, 1869. After their marriage they moved to Chicago where they lived until 1877, when they came to Iowa located near McCallsburg moving into town in 1896, having lived in this community fifty-one years. To this union was born nine children, two having preceeded her: A. C. Hanson, McCallsburg; M. C. Hanson, Clarkfield, Minn.; Geo. Hanson, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Carrie Billings, Long Beach, Calif.; Dave Hanson and Mrs. Minnie Shoemaker, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Frank Hanson of Webster, N. D. All were present at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Billings. There ar also 24 grandchildren and ten great grand children. She also leaves one brother, W. H. Anderson of Alberta, Canada and a host of friends who will also miss her.

Since the death of her husband in 1909 she built a home here, now being used for the manse, where she and her son Dave lived a few years, before they left for California, where she made her home a part of the time with her daughters, Mrs. Billings and Mrs. Shoemaker.

For the last two years she has made her home with her son, A. C. Hanson at McCallsburg.

The past few years Mrs. Hanson had been in poor health and was lovingly cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Hanson, who did all they could for her.

Beside the children who were all here for the funeral but Mrs. Billings there were, Mrs. M. C. Hanson of Clarksfield; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Engebritsen and three daughters and their husbands and Mrs. Olas Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Rorem, all of Ellsworth, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rorem and Mr. Austin Rorem of Radcliffe, Mrs. Anna Anderson and son Lloyd of Somonank, Ill., and Lloyd Hanson of Thor.
