Obituary for Clifford "Cliff" Lorin Carlson
Clifford L. Carlson, 80, of Slater, Iowa passed from this life on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.Cliff was born February 22, 1932 at home on the farm south of Slater to Alvin R. and Helen (Drake) Carlson. Cliff graduated from Sheldahl High School in 1950 and in 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the USS Toledo CA-133, a heavy cruiser, where he served during the Korean War. In 1989 a reunion group was formed and he served on their Board of directors and loved his Navy buddies. Cliff worked for Carriers Insurance in Des Moines for over 25 years, working his way up to Vice President of Underwriting and Sales. In later years, he had worked for General Insurance in Huxley, Iowa. He truly loved his work and enjoyed going to work every day. He was a member of the Slater United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #115, Scottish Rite, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, American Legion, Life Member of the VFW, USS Toledo CA-133 Association Board of Directors and the Central Iowa Tractor Club.
Cliff enjoyed his collections of model trains, toy tractors and toy semi-trucks. He enjoyed fishing, golf and outdoor grilling. He especially enjoyed being on the farm, driving his tractors, and time spent with his family.
Cliff is survived by Wilma, his wife of 38 years; his children, Colette (Jack) Ferguson of Riverside, CA, Kevin Carlson of Madrid, IA, Danette Carlson of San Juan Capistrano, CA; step-daughters Paula (Brad) Alleman of Slater, IA, and Suzanne (Terry) Weatherman of Huxley; his grandchildren, Chase Carlson, Cody Carlson, Paige Carlson, Nick Alleman, Kris Alleman, Jesse Weatherman and Jared Weatherman; his sister Arloween Pohl; his nieces and many other relatives and friends. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Elmer Pohl.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Slater United Methodist Church, Bliss Cancer Center, or the Israel Family Hospice House.
