Funeral services for L. S. Johnson, 72, Minnesota and Iowa horse buyer for 52 years, were held on Tuesday, Dec 11, at the Watonwan funeral home and First Lutheran church in St. James, Minn. Rev. Harold S. Strand officiated.
Mr. Johnson died at 4:45 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, following a stroke.
Musical selections were presented at the funeral home by a vocal trio consisting of Mrs. Melvin Anderson, Mrs. G. Elliott Moody and Mrs. Lawrence Schuett. At the church, music was sung by the Kansas Lake-Long Lakemen's octette.
Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Clarence and Ralph Johnson; Phillip Askevold, Melvin Anderson, Ted Anderson and Alen Dobbe.
Burial was at Story City cemetery following a funeral in Immanuel church with Rev. Strand officiating.
Lew S. Johnson was born Jan. 18, 1879 at Calamus, Ia., the son of Lars and Sarah Johnson.
His boyhood was spent in Clinton county, and later he moved to Story City.
March 29, 1905 he was married to Mamie Sheldahl at Huxley, Ia. She survives him.
Following the marriage, Mr. Johnson's career took him to Cambridge for four years; to Story City where the family lived 24 years; to Butterfield, Minn., where they spent 12 years farming, and finally to St. James, where Mr. Johnson lived the past six years.
Mr. Johnson was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the First Lutheran church in St. James.
Three daughters and three sons survive Mr. Johnson, in addition to his wife. Two other children died in infancy.
The children are: Mrs. H. H. (Lilly) Eckstrom, St. James; Mrs. Clarence (Alice) Abelson, Butterfield, Minn.; Gaylord, Story City; Mrs. Sidney (Irene) Janes, Dayton, Ohio; Donald of Story City and Luane of Odin, Minn.
Two sisters and three brothers also survive. They are: Mrs. M. J. Nelson of Cambridge and Mrs. Trena Eness of Gilbert; Jas. L. Johnson of Butterfield, Minn., C. L. Johnson of Story City and Hans Johnson of El Segundo, Calif.
Eight grandchildren and one great grandchild survive.
