BORN: January 25, 1919
DIED: January 8, 2013
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Rachel Pauline Book passed away January 8th, 2013. Pauline was born January 25th, 1919 to Flossie and Verne Kingsbury of rural Boone, Iowa. She married Donald Leander Book of Storm Lake, Iowa on February 14, 1940, taking up farming in Boone Co., then Story Co. Blessed with sons, Jerry (Doris), Chariton; Dennis- Avoca, Wisconsin; Loren (Ruth), Nevada IA; David (Beverly), Worthville, Kentucky and Don Phommachakr, Des Moines, IA. Pauline also took great joy in her 10 grandchildren: Verne, Kimberley, Cassandra, Monica, Sara, Brenda, Susan, Ethan, Jacob and Ella Rachel. Her blessings continued with 10 great grandchildren: Avery, Grace, Hana, Loren, Georgia, Caleb, Hannah, Isaac, Jonathan and Emmelynn with 3 more great grandchildren due in the next 3 months!

Pauline was an adventurer. Raising 4 boys and being a farmer's wife was adventure enough. In the fall of 1961 the Books became an AFS host family. She welcomed her new "son" from Laos Don Phommachakr. This new chapter gave Pauline an experience that would fuel her passion to study other cultures and their history and lead her to adventures all over the world. By the late 70's, she planned her first trip to the island of Majorca off the coast of Spain, part of a tour offered by ISU. She began to travel independently, walking the ancient paths of Greece, kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland, exploring the jungles of Southeast Asia, the Himalayas of Nepal, the art museums of London and Paris...19 countries in all. Making friends and connections that would last a lifetime.

She became increasingly passionate about her family history, taking frequent trips in pursuit of the next clue to her family tree. From Boonesborough, Kentucky, to Virginia, to Missouri, to the old Santa Fe Trail and on to California, she uncovered nuggets of information that filled in the blanks of a family story that she so wanted told.

Pauline was fascinated by the simple beauty of the things around her whether they were flowers or weeds, squirrels or birds, old barns or fence... the list was long. To capture the beauty that she saw she painted those simple things, preferring watercolor as her medium. She would fill her travels with artistic experience...museums, inspiration or classes and seminars.
"Grandma Book" loved being a grandma. She was always ready to take the kids on a great adventure. Sometimes in the back yard, sometimes in the basement of her house or in the story's she told and the pictures she painted. She inspired in them creativity and an attitude that would help them think "outside the box" of life.

As we now reflect on a life so full… we see her journey here is complete. She now moves on to her last great adventure into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus!
