Charlene Rae Hammond
September 13, 1944 - January 24, 2013Charlene Rae Hammond, 68, of Windsor Heights, formerly of Lake Ponderosa (Montezuma), passed away Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Charlene was born September 13, 1944, to Charles and Phyllis (Herman) Barnhill in Des Moines. She graduated in 1962 from North Polk High School and the Marshalltown School of Nursing in 1964. On August 21, 1969, she was united in marriage to Hugh Hammond. Charlene was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Montezuma and enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
Charlene is survived by her husband, Dr. Hugh Hammond of Windsor Heights; her daughter, Beth (Chris) Carlson of Urbandale; her grandchildren, Ella and Devin of Urbandale; her sisters, Karen Ahlman of Casa Grande, AZ and Arlys (Dr. Jerry) McCauley of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Larry Ahlman.
Visitation will 4-6 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at the Elkhart Christian Church in Elkhart. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at the Elkhart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Southview Church in loving memory of Charlene.
