Clement "Clem" Marsden
April 01, 1921 - December 24, 2012

Clement "Clem" Marsden, 94, of Ames passed away Monday, December 24, 2012, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Clem was born April 1, 1918, to Harry and Leona (Gibson) Marsden. Clem graduated from Stennett High School in 1936, where he was active in sports. He attended Iowa State College in Ames and in 1941graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Clem taught and coached in Glidden, Iowa, during the 1941-42 school year before enlisting in the Army Air Corps.

Clem was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and served for the duration of World War II as a navigator in the 457th Bomb Group stationed at Glatton, England. He flew 30 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart, European Theater of Operations and World War II Victory Medals for his service. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After the war, Clem resumed teaching in Greenwood, Wisconsin, and Ogden, Iowa. In Ogden he met Ethel Miller and they were married December 28, 1946, in Perry, Iowa.

In 1951 Clem obtained his Master's Degree from Drake University. He continued teaching and coaching sports in Harlan, Iowa, until 1955. From 1955 to 1980 Clem served as the principal of Eldora High School and as that school's athletic director from 1955-1972. He also served on the Iowa High School Athletic Association Representative Council from 1970 -1980.

In addition to his administrative duties Clem provided leadership and guidance to both students and faculty. While in Eldora he was very active in the community. Clem was a member of the Kiwanis Club and American Legion. He was an active member of the Eldora Methodist Church, helped with Boy Scouts and lent a hand to many community projects. Clem retired in 1980.

After retiring Clem and Ethel moved to Ames, Iowa, and became members of the First United Methodist Church in Ames. In his summers off from teaching and after his retirement Clem adjusted hail and multi-peril crop insurance losses for Dornberger Berry Company. Clem enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking and all sports. Spending time with family was his greatest joy.

Clem is survived by wife Ethel of Ames, his four children and their spouses, Steven (Rebecca Rosenbaum) of Iowa City, Jean (Guy Hugunin) of Placitas, New Mexico, Paul (Cherry) of Rockwell City, Iowa, and Hugh (Sheri) of Ames, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Clem was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Marion and sister Laura Jean.

Per Clem's wishes, he has been cremated and services are being planned for a later date.

Memorials may be sent First United Methodist Church of Ames and Green Hills Employee Scholarship Fund.
