Sherrill Orvis Hegland, age 88, of Story City, passed away November 13, 2012 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, November 18 at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, IA. Funeral services for Sherrill will be held on Monday, November 19, at 10:00 a.m. at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City, with burial in the Roland Cemetery. Sherrill was born to Thor and Helen Louise (Hauge) Hegland on September 25, 1924, in McCallsburg, Iowa. He was confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church, in Ames, Iowa in 1938 and graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1944. Sherrill attended Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls and served in the US Army at Ft. Knox Kentucky for 2 years from 1945-46. Rachel Glenn and Sherrill were married on March 17, 1952 at Bangor Friends Church. To this union, two children were born: David and Cindy. After farming from 1946 to 1987, Sherrill and Rachel retired to Roland, Iowa and later moved to Timberland Village in Story City in 2008. As a member of Bethany Lutheran Church his entire adult life, he served in various positions and was happy to support the Kumla Dinner every year. Sherrill was a member of Samuel-Reid American Legion Post #334 and served in several positions, including the annual Memorial Day Service. Sherrill strongly supported education, serving on the NESCO School Board from 1959-1972, part of that time as President. He participated in a Ukranian Farm Friendship Force during 1993. Sherrill loved car racing and attended the Indianapolis 500 race for 15 years. He also enjoyed flying his ultra-light airplane and giving his friends and neighbors aerial photos of their farmsteads. He took the family to both coasts, Canada, and Mexico in their camper. Sherrill and Rachel also traveled to the Bahamas, Hawaii, Alaska, and Norway. In later years, he kept busy walking, exercising, attending marketing seminars, and having coffee with friends; always eager for conversation and a bite to eat. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Rachel; son David (Marsha) Hegland, daughter Cindy (Scott) Anderson, all of McCallsburg; grandchildren Sara (Daniel) Robinson of San Antonio, TX, Justin Hegland of Story City, IA, Keith Anderson of McCallsburg, IA, and Becky Hegland of North Aurora, IL; great-grandchildren Thor and Myra Robinson of San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law Esther Artley of Hampton, IA; many nieces and nephews. Sherrill was preceded in death by his parents Thor and Louise Hegland; infant sister Esther Hegland; sister Helen and John Klousia; brother Robert Hegland; in-laws Tom and Lucille Glenn, Ivan and Margaret Harken, and Dan Artley; and neice Mary Feldhoff. Blessed be the memory of Sherrill Orvis Hegland.
