Thomas L. Mathre was born in Kendall, county, Illinois, on August 31, 1862. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Mathre, pioneer Norwegian immigrants. He was baptized and confirmed in the North Prairie Lutheran church near Helmer Illinois. After his public school education, he attended Northwestern Business college for two terms.

In 1885 he came to Iowa and began farming near Stanhope. On March 22, 1891, he was married to Miss Hannah Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bendix Olson of the Stanhope community. They lived on his farm near Stanhope and were members of the St. Paul Lutheran church there until they moved to Story City in March, 1910. In Story City they became members of the Immanuel church, where he was a loyal member until his death.

Since 1910 Mr. Mathre was in the garage business for a short time, and operated farm machinery such as threshing machines, corn shellers, and the last years worked as a salesman of household articles.

He was the father of five children, who all survive him. They are Mrs. Birdie Nelson of Ames, Myrtle of Story City, Mrs. Lillian Campbell of Minneapolis, Mrs. Blanche McIntyre of Des Moines, and Tilford of Ames. Hde had 18 grand children and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Iver Lund and Mrs. B. K. Lund of Story City and two brothers, Sewell of Stanhope and Martin of Denver, Colorado. Also many nieces and nephews and a host of friends mourn his passing.
