Velma Irene Kennedy

BORN: July 13, 1927
DIED: August 28, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Velma Irene Kennedy was born in Lock Springs, Missouri on July 13, 1927, the daughter of Luellen and Martha Carpenter. She attended school and graduated from Jameson High School. While in school, Velma played basketball and various sports. She also graduated from Superior Beauty Academy in Kansas City, MO. She married Howard Beck and they later divorced. On April 17, 1964, she was united in marriage to John W. Kennedy.

She held various sales positions in the Ames area, including The Bootery, Bobby Rogers, and managed Casey's in West Ames for 13 years before retiring.

She was a woman with a great sense of humor and an abundance of energy. She never failed to help someone out when in need. She remained very active until her most recent illness in January of this year.

Velma was known for her great cooking skills. She could prepare the best feast and was always known for her 'million dollar fudge', peanut brittle, and potato salad, as well as many other family favorites. She made sure no one ever went away hungry from gatherings as she prepared a full course meal for many.

Velma passed away Tuesday, August, 28, 2012 at 85 years of age at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, surrounded by family and special friend, Kristi.

Velma is survived by her husband, John, of Ames; four children, Steve (Marvel) Beck of Gallatin, MO, Randy (Connie) Kennedy of Slater, Mike Kennedy of Boone, and Shelley (Max) Nelson of New Richmond, WI; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law Luella Pierce of San Diego, CA and Sharon (Larry) Linville of Ozark, MO; sister-in-law Pauline (Lawrence); sister-in-law Ellen (Gerald); many nieces and nephews; and also her special friend Kristi Younis of Gilbert.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Lawrence, Gerald and Louis "Lynn"; daughter Linda Chittenden in 2003; brother-in-law Hubert Peirce; sister-in-law Sandy (Lynn); and an infant sister in 1931.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the many wonderful staff, doctors and nurses in the ICCU department at Mary Greeley for their excellent care during this difficult time.
