Gladys M. Hyler Tice, 93, of Davenport, Iowa, a longtime resident of Story County, Ames, Iowa, mother of a Shippenville resident, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, in Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport.

Born March 23, 1913, in Nevada, Iowa, she was the eldest child of Peter C. and Sophie Farni. She attended Milford Township School in Story County. The family moved to Ames in 1928.

Mrs. Tice was a homemaker and worked privately as a seamstress in her home while raising her family. She was employed by J.C. Penney Co. in Ames until she retired in 1975. During World War II, she did
alterations for the sailors from the V-12 Navy Unit stationed at Iowa State College.

She loved doing handiwork and as a hobby, made many beautiful quilts of all sizes. She also collected thimbles and antique furniture. Mrs. Tice was a member of the First Christian Church for more than 50 years, was a past matron and 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, a past high priestess and 50-year member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Royal Order of Amaranth, Social Order of Beauceant, all in Ames, and was a member of the Daughters of the Nile in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the recipient of the Grand Cross of Colors from the Order of Rainbow Girls and served on their advisory board for many years. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She first was married Dec. 13, 1930, to Joseph P. Hyler, from which two daughters and one son were born, and he died Jan. 10, 1963. She then was married Jan. 16, 1972, to Harold J. Tice, who died July 14, 1992.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Zugg and husband, Lyle, of Davenport, Iowa, and Mary Jo Rhode and husband, Ivan, of Shippenville; a daughter-in-law, Jan Hyler of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren, Steven Zugg of Mulberry, Fla., Vickie Hagen and husband, John, of Davenport, Rick Zugg of Wichita, Kan., William Zugg of Lutz, Fla., Jeff Hyler and wife, Barb, of Geneva, Ill., Julie Fitzhugh and husband, Eric, of Indianola, Iowa, A, David Rhode of Cuthbert, Ga., and Matthew Rhode of Lima, Peru, South America; two great-granddaughters, two great-grandsons, two step-great-granddaughters; two sisters-in-law, Jean Farni of Minnetonka, Minn., and Corrine Hyler of Des Moines; a brother-in-law, John Williams of Lakewood, Colo., and many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Eugene J. "Jack" Hyler March 18, 1991; two sisters, Mrs. Jay (Bernice) Hutchison and Mrs. John (Helen) Williams; and a brother, Edward Farni.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in Steven's Memorial Chapel in Ames where services will be held at 1 p.m. The Runge Mortuary, 838 E. Kimberly Road, Davenport, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
