After saying goodbye to her family and friends, Marilyn Kalseim Farnsworth, a longtime Borrego Springs, California resident, left for home on January 3, 2012. She died of emphysema at the age of 82.

Marilyn was born on a farm near Story City, Iowa, the youngest of five children born to Viola and Robert G. Kalseim. She attended her first eight years of schooling in a one-room schoolhouse. And, yes, she did walk in the snow to reach that school and she took her turn at the duties of bringing in the cobs and coal to heat the one room.

Marilyn, who wrote this obituary, graduated from Story City High School in Story City and attended Drake University in Des Moines.

In 1955, Marilyn moved with her family to Garden Grove, California. She worked at Paul Revere Elementary School. In 1966 she moved with her family to Escondido, CA. She went to work for NCR in Rancho Bernardo, California.

In 1974, she married Norman Farnsworth. In 1980, along with two partners, they purchased Stanlunds Motel in Borrego Springs, California. In 1983, Marilyn and Norm moved to Borrego Springs to manage the motel. After Stanlunds was sold she went to work for DiGiorgio Corporation and worked for the Country Club for 20 years.

Marilyn was an active mem ber of Soroptimist International of Borrego Springs for many years. She was also active in the Community United Methodist Church of Borrego Springs. She was a volunteer for the Borregc Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Norman; two daughters, Georgeann (David) Holland of Charlotte, North Carolina and Deborah (Rolf) Steve of Escondido, California; two stepchildren, Douglas

Farnsworth and Diane Farnsworth; two sisters, Alverta Larrison of McKinleyville, California and Arleen Lund of Story City, Iowa. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several in-laws, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Berniece Nibe; and a brother, Robert V. Kalseim.

A memorial service will be held at Community United Methodist Church in Borrego Springs on Saturday, February 25.

A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City at a later date. Burial will be at Story City Municipal Cemetery in Story City.

Memorial Service

A memorial service for Marilyn Kalseim Farnsworth will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 624 Elm Avenue, Story City, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012. Marilyn passed away on January 3, 2012 in Borrego Springs, California.
