James "Jim" Dodds

July 3, 1923 - March 23, 2011
Ames, Iowa

James (Jim) Miller Dodds, 87, of rural Ames, passed away at Veterans Community Life in Des Moines on Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Jim was born July 3, 1923, to B.A. and Ella (Miller) Dodds in Ames. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1942, and began farming east of Gilbert. Jim was drafted in 1944 and served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant with the Military Police in the Pacific Islands and Japan. After returning home, he continued farming and attended Iowa State University.

Jim married Patricia (Purk) Jensen on February 12, 1955, in Nevada. In 1959, they moved to a farm in Grant Township and he continued his passion of farming. Jim was a longtime 4H member and leader in Franklin and Grant townships. He was a member of the Nevada Masonic Lodge for 48 years, the Nevada and Ames Orders of the Eastern Star and the Judea White Shrine of Ames. He was also a charter member of the Order of Amaranth in Ames. Jim served on the Grant township trustee board and rural fire. He loved farming, raising sheep and above all, his family.

Jim will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Patricia; his son, Lars (Carol) Jensen of Nevada; four grandchildren, Barbara (Stephen) Owen of Nevada, Stasia (Brian) Renfrow of Nevada, Jon (Sarah) Jensen of Huxley and Julie Jensen of Nevada; and six great-grandchildren, Tyler and Lindsey Crawford, William and Gabrielle Owen & Josie and Garrett Jensen. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Dodds of Ames; sister, Norma Lande of Webster City; sister-in-law, Lillian DeHart of St. Joseph, MO; many nieces and nephew and their families. Jim is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marie Sande.

Visitation will be Friday, March 25, 2011, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada with internment following at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Memorial contributions will be made in honor of Jim's memory to the American Parkinson Disease Association and may be left at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.
