Marshalltown, Iowa

Myris Joy Ray of Marshalltown, IA died Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Iowa River Hospice.

Born September 26, 1925 to Robert Cree Meyers and Hazel Alvina McClary (McDermott), Myris was the oldest of four children. She grew up in the Knierim, IA area being raised by her aunts and uncles. She attended schools in the Duncombe/Eagle Grove/ Manson areas. She met Robert Ray in early 1944 and they were married on June 29, 1944 at the Rectory of Corpus Christi in Fort Dodge. To this union were born three daughters.

Myris was a stay at home mom until the late 1950’s when she went to work at Younkers Department store. She was there for 16 years retiring as a department manager. From there she was a cook at the Jerry Rabiner Memorial Boys Ranch in Fort Dodge for three years and ended her working career with 13 years at Manpower.

Myris enjoyed helping people, socializing and just being a caring loving person. Everyone loved her beautiful smile. Throughout her life she was always someone anyone could count on. She enjoyed playing cards and was involved in many couples and single card groups over the years.

Myris and Bob moved from Fort Dodge to Marshalltown in 2003 and resided at the Embers Retirement Community. They loved living there and became very involved in all activities and aspects that the Embers offered. Myris was also active in the Emberettes Red Hat Society and she loved the outings they went on. Bob and Myris worked the front desk at Embers for a few years while they lived there.

Myris is survived by her daughters, Madonna Ellen (Dale) Opdahl, Redondo Beach, CA; Mary Katherine (Tom) Curley of Marshalltown, IA; Deborah Anna (Paul) Malsom of Nevada, IA; 4 granddaughters Vanette Metzger, Jennifer (Troy) Kopriva, Allyson (Brock) Johnson and Heather Malsom, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband of 65 years, Bob and her three brothers, Richard and Lee Myers, and James McDermott preceded her in death.

A Memorial Service and Mass will be celebrated at the Embers Retirement Community Room at 1211 West State Street in Marshalltown on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 1pm with Father Jim Miller of St. Mary’s parish officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice or The Embers Retirement Community.
