Obituary Bertha Barz Aldrich

Bertha Barz Aldrich 75, of Alden, passed away on July 9, 2011 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames of complications of myelodysplastic syndrome.

She was born during a snowstorm on a farm 4 miles South of Dows on November 30th 1935. She was the 4th child of Herbert and Margaret Oleson Barz. She spent her childhood and high school years on a farm 3 miles South of Rowan where she attended grade and high school. She graduated from Rowan High School in the class of 1953.

She married Jerry Aldrich on September 20th 1953 and to that marriage were born three children, Steve (Nancy) of Dows, IA, Doug (Gwen) of Bemidji, MN, and Carol (Steve) Scheid of Nevada, IA. She has three grandsons, Danial(fiancé Stacy McKillip) Scheid, of Dubuque, Brian (Sarah) Scheid of Chicago, IL, and Larry Aldrich of Denver Co, and a granddaughter, Dawn (Seth) Emerson, of Fleetwood, NC.

Her work career included working at Schager Produce in Alden, the Sears catalog store in Iowa Falls, at Weaver Construction Co., and finally a 20 year career as a rural mail carrier for the USPS. Upon retirement in 2000 she helped her husband with their Christmas tree farm and pursued her many hobbies which included riding and training horses, flower gardening, pond gardening, making stained glass windows and lamps,
traveling, quilting, reading, and competing as a senior athlete.

Among these hobbies, in her later years, was her love of competition in track and field events. She competed at the state level in the midwest and seven international senior olympics. She earned over 200 gold medals at the state level and 7 Olympic medals in cycling (road racing), race walking, shot put, and discus.

She is survived by her husband, her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and spouses, a brother, Bill of Newton, a sister, Irene (Bob) Keleher, of Fremont, CA, her brother-in-law, Lee (Lynne) Aldrich, sister-in-law Joan (Roger) Rietz, and many nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother and spouse Bob (Barbara) Barz, a sister-in-law Donna (Bill) Barz, and her uncles and aunts.

Her body was cremated with cremains to be interred at Graceland Cemetery at Rowan. There will be no funeral. A family and friends celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
