Dorothy May Smith

May 14, 1918 - February 20, 2012
Colo, Iowa

Dorothy M. Smith, 93, of Colo passed away Monday, February 20, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Dorothy was born May 14, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Jennie (Hannah) Ward at Marshalltown, Iowa. She graduated valedictorian of the Albion Consolidated School. She attended Marshalltown Business College and worked as a secretary at Marshall Canning Company. On May 29, 1946, she married Ralph Smith and moved to the Colo area where they farmed. Dorothy worked 19 years for Donnelley Marketing in Nevada and was a member of the St. Mary's Altar and Rosary, CLC/Hi Lo, 50 Plus and SENA clubs. She enjoyed quilting, reading, playing cards, following ISU and spending the winters in Texas at Mobile Gardens.

Dorothy is survived by her four children: Thomas (Marsha) Smith of Clive, Virginia (John) Tietz of Lakewood, CO, Dona (Ken) Cowman of Cambridge and Patricia Anderson of Nevada; three grandchildren, Terri (Erik) Bradshaw, Scott Anderson, and Robert Anderson; a great-grandson, Logan Bradshaw; her brother, Bill Ward of Nevada; and her sister, Jean Hurlbut of Garwin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph in 1988; her sisters, Ruth Ward (in infancy) and Lois Damman; and her twin brother, Donald.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo with Father Rick Dagit, officiating. Dorothy will be laid to rest in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy Smith Memorial Fund.
