Obituary

James Arthur Doggett, 74, of Ames, passed away at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, while surrounded by his loved ones on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011. . Services will be held at Stevens Memorial Chapel at 607 28th Street, Ames, IA. Family visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the West Lawn of the Ames Municipal Cemetery at a later date.

James was born Aug. 18, 1937 in Ames, Iowa to Ralph and Ruth Doggett. He graduated from Ames High School in 1955. James met Clela Mae Doggett at Ames Skateland, and it was their shared love of Gospel and Country Music that bonded the couple together. Their dates frequently included the old KRNT Theatre for a night of Country Music. James and Clela were married on June 9, 1956 in Ellsworth, Iowa. His beloved wife of 55 years, Clela, passed away on June 30 of this year.
James built the couple's first home in Story City, IA. They later moved to Fairfield where they lived for 23 years prior to moving to Ames in 1988. James worked as a Communications Technician at the Iowa Department of Transportation for 36 years both in Fairfield and in Ames. He was an Assistant Boy Scout Master supervising canoe trips into Canada for numerous years. He also enjoyed photography, airplanes, ham radio, coin collecting, astronomy, and wood working.

James and Clela enjoyed camping and traveled throughout all 50 states. They visited 49 states in their motor home. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, and their 50th anniversary in Alaska. James was musically talented and played many instruments including the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and harmonica. He spent his retirement years participating at bluegrass festivals and country music jam sessions.

James is survived by four children, Dennis (Linda) Doggett of Boone, Deborah Parker of Marion, Douglas (Cindy) Doggett of Bondurant, and Darcy Doggett of Bloomfield, NJ; seven grandchildren, Dustin Doggett, Dawn Doggett, Sara Doggett, Jessica Doggett, Zachary Parker, Jennifer Parker, and Katelyn Parker; three step grandchildren, Jason (Juliet) Stevens, Amber Stevens, and Tyler Stevens; two step great grandchildren, Kaylee Stevens, and Jackson Stevens; One brother, David Doggett of California.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one brother, Thomas, and sister, Nancy Tate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Israel Family Hospice House of Ames, IA. Cards and memorials can be sent to Deb Parker, 365 W 34th Ave, Marion, IA 52302.
