Obituary

May Elizabeth McDonald McKenna, 91, of Ames, died on Saturday, June 16, 2012 while a patient at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. May was born on the family farm just north of Jewell on May 24, 1921, the 7th of ten children to John and Kathryn Brinnick McDonald. May lived on the farm until moving to town as a teenager and graduated from Jewell High School in 1939, the first in her family to do so. While in high school, May played girls basketball as a guard and later married Kenneth L. McKenna in Sioux City, NE on November 26, 1939.

May loved her 8 grandchildren and her 15 great-grandchildren. She is remembered as a great cook and candy maker. May was a very giving, caring person who was also a hard worker. She spent most of her life as a waitress, including working with her sister, Pearl Politis, at various restaurants in the Ames area. She also enjoyed watching basketball games and movies.

May was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, who died in 1982; 3 brothers, John, William and Cleo McDonald; 5 sisters, Kathryn Klaver, Opal McDonald, Pearl Politis, Florence Loder and Mary Temple; a granddaughter, Bretta McKenna and her treasured dog, BG. May is survived by her children Bob (Pam) McKenna of Bondurant and Gayle (Steve) Hornung of Huxley; grandchildren Dina McKenna of Ankeny, Wenda (Chad) Bishop of Polk City, Kendra (Tim) Gustafson of Ames, Ned (Renee Negret) McKenna of Des Moines, Bobby McKenna of Steward, IL, Stacey (Ed DenBeste) Hornung of Atlantic, IA, Bill Hornung of Longville, MN and Steph (Russ Olsen) Hornung of Papillion, NE; 15 great grandchildren and a brother, Jim McDonald of Ames.
