Mary Jane Thompson

March 29, 1917 - August 5, 2012

Mary Jane Thompson was born on March 29th, 1917, in Webster City, Iowa. Her parents were Soren and Josephine Hansen. She had one younger sister, Betty Lou Tarp (now deceased). Mary Jane graduated from Webster City high school in 1935. She then attended St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1939. Subsequently she taught English, French, and music for 30 years in Manning, Huxley, and North Polk.

Mary Jane was married to Randall Cecil Thompson on August 10, 1946 at the English Lutheran Church in Webster City, Iowa. They farmed in the Huxley area for many years, raising Holstein cattle and crops. Their marriage was blessed with four sons: James, Charles, Stephen, and Phillip. Each of the sons married and had children. James married Linda (Shaw) and their children are Lindsay (married Detlef Maltas) and Nicholas. Charles married Sybil (Norman) and their children are Brianna (daughter Celia) and Dane. Stephen married Brenda (Severson) and their children are Molly (married Ryan Pond) and Taylor (married Erin Swieter). Phillip married Zenaida (Rodrigues) and their child is Copio.

Mary Jane was active for many years in the Bethany Lutheran Church in multiple capacities ranging from Sunday school teaching to choir to ladies auxiliary activities. She was a true matriarch of the family, always interested in family activities of her children and grandchildren.

Following her move to the Madrid Home, she had a steady stream of former students and friends visit her to share memories and stories.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
