Margaret Esther Overland

DIED: December 11, 2010
LOCATION: Story City, Iowa

Margaret Overland, 94, of Story City, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa.

Margaret Esther (Phelps) Overland was born August 6, 1916 in Springdale, Iowa. She was married in 1953 to Jesse B. Overland. They lived on the family farm northwest of Story City until 2000, when they moved into town.

Margaret, after graduating with a degree in Cosmetology, owned her own hair salon in Glendale, California. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Fashion Design, and worked for Warner Brothers Studio in California. She also worked for the city of Ames for many years. Margaret was very creative and after her marriage to Jesse shared her talents as leader of the Randall Rosebuds 4-H Club. She designed a Macramé Steer Head Kit for the Iowa Cattleman’s Association that was sold throughout the United States.

Margaret was the treasurer for Hamilton County Fair Board for several years. She and Jesse thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent with the Fair Association. Margaret and Jesse enjoyed travel and had been to 49 of the 50 states, Nova Scotia and Mexico.

She is survived by her children Marci Rollins of
Kaneoha, Hawaii; Jean (Dave) Horlacher of Frankfort, Indiana, and Jane Moore of Story City; her sister Jo Chrencik of Birmingham, Alabama; her brother George Phelps of Bettendorf, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Stephanie Disbrowe, Stephanie Kerner, Dennis Horlacher, Nick Horlacher, Cathy Moore, Jessica Horlacher, Tracy Moore, and Anna Moore; and ten great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters; two brothers; one son, Edwin Overland; and two grandchildren, Patrick Baldus and Rene Disbrowe.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.
