Donald Leroy Smith
November 20, 1954 - July 3, 2012Donald Leroy Smith age 57 of Madison, Alabama, formerly of Collins died on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Alabama after a short illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Burial, with full military rites, will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.
Donald was born on November 20, 1954 in Nevada to Russell and Mary (Boozell) Smith. He graduated in 1973 from Collins High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. Donald served in Korea, Colorado, North Carolina, Panama, and Alabama. While in Korea, Donald met the love of his life, Ahn. Together they have two children, Sue Ann and John. They were married for several years before divorcing. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Athens, Alabama for many years.
Donald is survived by his children, Sue Ann Moriarty and John Smith; his ex-wife Ahn, all of Madison, AL; three grandchildren Kody and Breann Moriarty of Madison, AL and Logan Smith of Des Moines; his parents Mary and Russell Smith of Collins; three brothers, Randy of Minnesota, Alan (Deb) of Colo, and Kim of Collins; two sisters, Phyllis Smith Steiner of Collins and Karen (Scott) Schnicker of Des Moines; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He will be missed by many.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 10 with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.
A memorial fund has been established in loving memory for the Freland Carver American Legion Post #81 in Collins.
Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Donald and his family.
