Lawrence Jacobson

BORN: December 10, 1912

DIED: July 12, 2011

LOCATION: Story City, Iowa

Life long Story County resident Lawrence R. Jacobson passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames at the age of 98 years. He had farmed in the Gilbert area his entire life and was an active member of the Gilbert and Story City communities.

Lawrence Jacobson was born on the family farm on December 10, 1912 to George and Lena Jacobson of Gilbert, Iowa. He was married to Vera Thompsen on September 29, 1935 and raised 4 children. Lawrence and Vera Jacobson celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in September 2010.

A graduate of Gilbert High School in 1930, he farmed north of Gilbert until his retirement in 1976 and in 1991 moved to Story City. In addition to farming, Lawrence had served as a member of the Rural Telephone Company, the board of Star Electric Company, secretary of the Gilbert Cooperative Elevator Board, and on the Central Iowa Mutual Insurance Association Board of Directors for 21 years. He was an active member of St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City where he had served as deacon, trustee and member of two pastor call committees. Lawrence’s life spanned a period of tremendous change from horse drawn school buses, two world wars, the great depression, aviation growth, space exploration and technological advance.

Lawrence was known as an avid photographer, taking many photos as he and his wife traveled extensively, visiting all 7 continents and hundreds of countries. He was involved in Triple G Square Dance Club for many years.

Lawrence Jacobson is survived by his wife, Vera; one sister Pauline Crandell of Burwell, NE; three children: Cathryn Ahrenholz of Mt Vernon, Il, Lloyd Jacobson of Lancaster, PA; Alan Jacobson of Woodinville, WA; seven grandchildren: Marilyn Switzer, Karen Ahrenholz, Sara Jacobson, Carolyn Hartin, Scott Hansen, Todd Hansen, and Marissa Jacobson; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister Genevieve; his daughter Cynthia Hansen; and his grandchild baby Ahrenholz.
