Obituary: Harriss Barry Thomas
Harriss Barry Thomas (Barry) joined his wife Jan in Heaven on Saturday September 24, 2011. He passed peacefully at Green Hills in the care of Wesley Hospice the result of pulmonary fibrosis.Barry was born to Harriss F. and Maude (Barry) Thomas on February 21, 1930 in Rolfe, Iowa the youngest of 3 children. He was raised in and graduated from high school in Ames, Iowa and attended Iowa State University. On November 11, 1951, Barry married Janet E. Higgs. With the exception of 7 years Barry and Jan lived their entire married life in Ames. Barry was a veteran of the Navy and worked at the Atomic Energy Commission, the Iowa DOT, General Filter, GEMCO, Todd & Sargent, Ibberson International, Agra Products International, George A. Rolfes Company and his own company, H. Barry Thomas and Associates.
Barry was a highly skilled construction and process engineer, salesman and management executive. He spent much of his career as a business turnaround specialist taking several companies from the brink of closure to sustained success. He published over 50 management and technical papers, and received numerous awards and recognitions in the agricultural construction industry. His passions included family, fishing, wood working, and furniture refinishing, spending summers at Okoboji, the property committee at Memorial Lutheran Church, and regular social gatherings of the "After The Game Group."
Barry was preceded in death by his wife Jan, his parents, 2 brothers and 1 great-grandson. He is survived by 2 sisters, 2 sons, Chandler and Kyle and their spouses Deb and Patricia, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Memorial Lutheran Church from 5:30 to 7:30 on Wednesday September 28. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Lutheran Church at 10:30 AM on Thursday September 29 with internment at Ames Municipal Cemetery immediately following. Monetary
