From Collins Gazette May 26, 1932
Mrs. George S. Finnie, one of the real pioneer women of Story county, passed away at her home in Collins, Wednesday night at eleven-twenty.
Mrs. Finnie had been in delicate health since last August, and during the past three weeks her condition had become critical in spite of all that medical care and loving hands might do.
Martha Ellen John, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. John, was born on a farm near Maxwell, October 10, 1854 and departed this life May 18, 1932, at the age of seventy-seven years, seven months and eight days.
She was united in marriage to George S. Finnie, where the town of Maxwell now stands, on June 29, 1871, and they have made their home in the Maxwell and Collins communities during their entire life. If she had been spared until the 29th of June, they would have celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary.
Four children came to bless this home: Mrs. Laura Holmes of Collins; Mr. A. M. Finnie, who departed this life on September 12, 1930; Mr. W. W. Finnie of Nevada and Mrs. W. H. Nibel of Des Moines. Also seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Sam Ozmun of Esbon, Kan., who with the aged husband and father are left to mourn her loss.
At the age of thirteen she united with the Presbyterian church at Maxwell and has lived a consistent Christian life and remained loyal to her faith during these many years.
Mrs. Finnie was a woman whose interest was centered nearly wholly in her home, she was a devoted mother and grandmother, a true and loving wife, a kindly neighbor and friend to all who learned to know her. She will be sadly missed in the home but the remaining loved ones will have the love and sympathy of a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Collins Church of Christ Friday, May 20, at 2:30 with Rev. Guthrie pastor of Maxwell Presbyterian church officiating. A double quartet composed of Mrs. G. C. Fish, Mrs. G. W. Graham, Miss Zola Gilley, Mrs. Jesse Torry, J. G. Gingles, Charles Shearer, J. R. Witmer and Thomas Huntrods, accompanied by Miss Jennie Huntrods at the piano, rendered most beautifully the songs, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Face to Face" and "It Is Well With My Soul."
The pallbearers, who carried her to her last resting place in the Collins Evergreen cemetery, were P. J. Wetrich, Curt Campbell, Ray Tiffany, Frank Campbell, G. F. Holland and Elsworth Campbell.
Among those from a distance who were in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Nibel and Billie, Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Nibel, Mr. and Mrs. Buryl Shearer, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Campbell all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Finnie and Maxine of Nevada; Miss Marian Harrison of South Bend, Kan.; Mr. and Mrs. Wade Finnie of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Logan Olinger, Mr. and Mrs. Will John, Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Smith, Mrs. Hugh McCashen, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Menier, Mr. and Mrs. Clarke John, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Olinger, Miss Rose John, Mrs. Chas.
