LOCATION: Story City, Iowa
Philip Roger Peterson was born on July 27, 1934, in Ames to Edward and Olive (Askelson) Peterson. Phil was a 1952 graduate of Story City High School. During his high school and college years he was an active athlete and continued to love athletics his entire life. He earned All-Conference honors for football for two years in high school, Most Valuable Player in football and basketball for one year, and was All-State Honorable Mention for football and basketball one year as well as captain of the team. While at Waldorf College, Phil was voted MVP in football and lettered in basketball.
Phil served in the Army from 1956-1958, serving 1½ years in Germany. After returning from the Army, Phil was a hog buyer for 38 years; 35 of those years as a buyer for Farmland Foods. He retired from Farmland in 1996.
Phil married Shirley Ann Peterson (yes, Peterson) on April 24, 1955, in Story City, Iowa. They have three children: Shelley (Dean) Mohling of Fredericksburg, Iowa; Dana (Matthew) Dunn of Odgen, Iowa; and Brent (Jennifer) Peterson of St. Joe, Missouri. They have sixteen grandchildren: Sara (Tim) Corcoran, Jake Mohling, Becca Mohling, Karl (Emily) Jacobson, Layne Jacobson, and Olivia, Tsion, Emma, Ava, Meskerem, Carson, Hermela, Christian, Cole, Connor and Cameron Peterson.
Phil loved driving, athletics, and seeing his grandkids. He drove to hundreds of ballgames for Roland-Story and his grandkids' games. He even continued driving semis and delivering cars during his retirement years.
Phil passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Israel Hospice House at 77 years of age following a very brief illness.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Peterson, Story City; a sister, Laurel Parks, three children and 16 grandchildren.
Memorials may be designated to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.
