Kenneth Sorenson
BORN: September 26, 1917
DIED: February 15, 2012
LOCATION: Boone, Iowa
Kenneth Sorenson, 94, died Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, February 17, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday also at Adams Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Ken was born September 26, 1917 near Kelley, Iowa, the son of James S. and Nellie G. (Garoutte) Sorenson. He grew up and worked on the farm during the "Great Depression." He graduated from Napier School.
On February 10, 1941, Ken joined the U.S. Army. He was based out of Boone, Iowa, part of the 34th "Red Bull" Division. He was on the front during WWII for over a year and a half engaging in battles in Northern Africa and Italy. The Anzio Beachhead battle in Italy was one of the major victories and a turning point in the war. On August, 30, 1945. Ken was honorably discharged.
After returning from the war, Ken attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. While there he met Dorothy Perkins and they were married on June 26, 1948, in Carthage, Missouri. They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma for four years and Ken worked in the refrigeration repair industry.
In the early 1950's, Ken and Dorothy moved back to the family farm between Ames and Boone, where they raised a son and farmed until retirement in 1976. Ken and Dorothy continued living on the farm the rest of their lives.
Ken was part of the "Greatest Generation" of which there are very few left. He will be sorely missed by friends and family who loved him dearly.
He is survived by his son James (Lisa) Sorenson of Ames; two grandsons, Jared Sorenson and Justin Sorenson of Ames; one step-daughter, Susan (Bill) Meggenberg of Meade, Kansas; and their five children and families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Dorothy and his brother Irving.
