DIED: February 29, 2012
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa
Delbert J. Johnson, 88, of Ames died peacefully February 29 at the Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday March 2 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 610 15th St., Ames. Funeral services are 10:30 am. Saturday, March 3 also at St. Paul.
Delbert was born December 26, 1923 in Story City to John M. and Sena (Jensen) Johnson. He was the youngest of eight children and grew up in rural Story City.
He left school in 9th grade when his father needed him to help at home. He worked for his dad's trucking business, his uncle's masonry, Woodland Farms, and various odd jobs to help provide during lean years. He served with pride in the U.S. Army during WW II.
He married Ellen Marie Stangeland May 25, 1947 at the Little Brown Church. They moved to Ames in 1954 and by then Delbert worked for Abe Mezvinsky and Ames Fruit and Grocery. He eventually managed two Ames stores. Later he worked for Randall's Foods. After retirement he stayed busy with lawn mowing and snow plowing for neighbors and friends. He married Anna (Redling) Shockley on March 9, 1996 in Ames.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters, Elaine (Brian) Anderson, and Janelle (Mark) Swenson all of Ames; grandchildren, Neila (David) Sneller, Seth (Kate) Anderson, Brock and Ben Swenson; great grandchildren, Ellen, Laura and Levi Sneller; brother, Kenneth (Judy) Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen Marie in 1995; infant great granddaughter, Grace Sneller; three brothers; three sisters; and his parents.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Israel Family Hospice House.
