From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:
Julia Betts
BORN: September 14, 1939
DIED: February 29, 2012
LOCATION: Boone, Iowa
Julie was born September 14, 1939, in Monona, Iowa and moved to Dubuque shortly after. She attended Dubuque schools and graduated from Dubuque Senior in 1957. Julie was active in church choir, athletic youth groups, and has fond memories of ice skating and barrel jumping. As a child, Julie loved spending time at her aunt and uncle's farm in Monona where she spent summers riding horses and enjoying farm life. In Monona, she formed a close-knit relationship with her grandma Daugs. While back in Dubuque, Julie loved spending time with her father going on walks and seeing movies weekly.
Julie began dating Dan her senior year of high school and they were engaged and married shortly after. Together, they made the journey to Iowa State University where Dan studied Veterinary Medicine and Julie gave birth to their first daughter, Audrey.
After Dan was drafted into the Army as a veterinary officer, the family moved to San Antonio for a short stint before returning to the Midwest. Audrey was followed by son Dan in 1966 and Kathy in 1968. Julie held numerous secretarial positions working for a dentist, lawyer, the music department at Iowa State, Bethesda Lutheran Church, and CAST, but she primarily worked in the schools so she could keep an eye on the kids. In 2003 she retired from Ames School Administration.
Julie's had many hobbies including reading, shopping, and arts and crafts. She loved to spend time at the cabin on Lake Washburn, near Outing, Minnesota, where she enjoyed kayaking, swimming, and socializing. Never one to run out of anything, Julie was sometimes irked by the title "Queen of Redundancy," but always had a light-hearted quip in return to any criticism.
Julie is survived by her husband, Daniel, of Ames; daughters, Audrey (Mark) Wheeler and Kathy Naatjes; son, Dan (Kris) Betts; brothers, Christian III (Sandy) Anderson and Eric (Laurie) Anderson; and five grandchildren, Katie Wheeler, Danielle Kahrs, Kim Naatjes, Emily Naatjes, Alex Betts. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Julie was the type of woman who was not easily defined by a hobby, interest, or personality type, but all that knew her couldn't resist her distinct sense of humor, contagious smile, and zest for life. She was truly unique and leaves us all with many great memories.
