Dr. Robert Roy Dappen

BORN: February 9, 1919

DIED: March 1, 2012

LOCATION: Story City, Iowa

Dr. Robert Ray Dappen was born February 9, 1919 to Dr. Roy and Pearl (McRight) Dappen in Meade, Kansas. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Iowa State University in 1942. In 1943 he was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. He served as navigator on the U.S.S. Leedstown during WWII and participated in seven invasions including Kwajalein, Saipan, Guam, Peleliu, Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, and Iwo Jima. He was awarded seven Bronze Stars and two Presidential Unit Citations.

After WWII, he returned to Iowa State University and earned his degree in Veterinary Medicine. He had 30 years in private practice followed by 20 years of meat inspection for the Federal Government.

For his work on Brucellosis legislation, Rabies control, and state meat inspection he was awarded Iowa Veterinarian of the Year for 1955.

While at Iowa State he participated in athletics, earning one freshman numeral and two varsity letters in baseball. After the war he was Iowa State's Freshman Baseball Coach.

Dr. Dappen passed away Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines at 93 years of age.
Dr. Dappen is survived by his wife Sara Anne F. Dappen; his two sons, Dr. Nathan Dappen and his wife Patty of Columbus, Ohio, and Nicholas Dappen of Ft. Worth, Texas; and four grandchildren: Alex, Andrea, and Susan Dappen, and Nichole Bryant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marie Ivey.
