From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Joan Marie Alsager

BORN: November 8, 1959

DIED: May 6, 2012

LOCATION: Radcliffe, Iowa

Joan Marie Alsager, 52, of Radcliffe, IA, passed away on May 6, 2012, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, while surrounded by her family after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Joan was born on November 8, 1959 to Edward and Sandy Morrison from whom she inherited Eddie's green thumb and Sandy's keen eye for a garage sale bargain.

Joan married her husband of 26 years, Loren Alsager, on May 30, 1986. Together they have two daughters, Lauren Alsager of Madison Lake, MN and Whitney Alsager (Phillip Beland) of Ankeny, IA. They also have two grandchildren, Colby and Olivia Alsager of Madison Lake, MN and three grand dogs. Besides her husband, children and grandchildren, Joan is survived by her two sisters Julie and Tamara Morrison, her sister-in-law Cheri Morrison, her brother James Morrison all of Ames, IA; her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Rosemary Alsager of Jewell, IA and a large extended family.

Over the years, Joan enjoyed many outdoor hikes and adventures with her family. She hiked to the top of Harney's Peak and Bear Butte. She roamed the Badlands with the buffalos, explored the Grand Canyon, and even danced with the Hualapai tribe members during one of their ceremonial performances. Joan also loved to camp, kayak, and view and feed the wildlife…even when the sign said not to. On her last adventure, Joan and her husband became members of the Crazy Horse Driller's Club after they hiked to the top of Crazy Horse Mountain Memorial in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.

In recent years, Joan's biggest passion was spending time with her two grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She enjoyed cheering at her grandson's football games (even though he was a Hawkeye) and watching her granddaughter show off all her gymnastic moves. This past winter she even enjoyed watching her two grandchildren down-hill ski. Joan also spent much of her time outside planting in her beautiful flower gardens, antiquing, cheering on the Cyclones, and taking care of her beloved pets.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Danny Morrison and pets Sissy, Little Dog and Pen Pen.

Per Joan's wishes, a private memorial party will be held with close family at a later date.
