Roger Dean STEPHENS was born August 30, 1933 in Ringgold county, Iowa to Paul and Goldie (MATTHEWS) STEPHENS.
He attended Ames High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 and was a 1953 graduate of Artillery School U.S. Army. He was married to DeAnn SWENSON on September 13, 1957 in Ames, Iowa, and they moved to Nevada, IA in 1961. Under the G.I. Bill, he received advance education from the Iowa Valley Community College District. He served in the USDA for 31 years, and he was support services supervisor for the NVSL in Ames when he retired in 1990. He also was engaged in farming.
Roger was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Ames American Legion Post #37, Treasurer of Central Iowa Regional Housing Authority, 4-H Leader for five years, and served on the Story County Board of Adjustment from 1989-1996. Aside from Roger's devotion to his family, his life's passion was farming and gardening. He also enjoyed his grandchildren, sports and traveling.
Roger died Saturday, February 14, 1998, at his home in Nevada of a massive heart attack.
Roger is survived by his wife DeAnn STEPHENS of Nevada; two sons, John and his wife Julie STEPHENS of State Center, IA, and James and his wife Nancy STEPHENS of Croughton Air Force Base, England; two daughters, Joan and her husband Steven REEVES of Sheridan, WY, and Julie STEPHENS of Perry, IA; two grandchildren, Jacob and Johanna STEPHENS; two step-grandchildren, Jason and Cory REEVES; two brothers, Roland STEPHENS of Boone, and Richard STEPHENS of Oakland, MI; four sisters, Pauline MUSSON of Iowa Falls, Velta CARROLL of Rochester, MN, Rosalie NELSON of Ames, and Marilyn MULANIX of Lady Lake, FL.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents.
