Longtime Ames Teacher Died Sunday. Myrtle Lanning, 90, longtime Ames school teacher, died Sunday night at a Nevada nursing home (Nov 8, 1959). She had been in ill health for the past year. Born on a farm near Koszta in Iowa County, she came to Ames with her parents in 1880. She graduated from Central High School here in March, 1887 and began teaching first and second grades at South School, on the present Lincoln School site. She entered old Central School as a pupil the first day the building was open and left the building as a teacher the last day it was used. She was honored by high school alumni in a reception at the Ames Country Club, May 21, 1954 in a program marking her completion of 50 years of teaching here. Miss Lanning was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Delta Kappa Gamma society. Survivors include her sister, Mrs. T. L. Gossard and brother-in-law Chester Morrison, both of Ames and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Adams Funeral Home. The Rev. Lawrence B. Beals, pastor the First Methodist Church will officiate. Burial is to be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Contributions to a Lanning Memorial Fund may be left at any Ames Bank.
