From Story County Watchman December 19, 1902

Maxwell, Dec. 15.--Mrs. L. C. Bales, aged sixty-three years, died at her home in the east part of town Friday night at 8:30 o'clock, from cancer in the stomach. This death is a remarkable one, in that is is the first in a family of five sisters and four brothers, the John family, all of whom, with the exception of one sister in Oregon, have lived in this vicinity for nearly half a century. The family is one of wonderful musical talent and is perhaps the best known family in the county. Besides the brothers and sisters, Mrs. Bales leaves one son, D. D. of Winterset, Ia. and one daughter, Mrs. Jas. Scott, of this place to mourn their loss.
