From Story County Watchman June 26, 1896
After a protracted illness of a number of months Mrs. Rueben Smith passed peacefully away from earth on last Saturday, June 27, 1896, shortly afer 11 a. m. aged 77 years, 9 months and 8 days. She was married to her now sorrowning husband on February 4, 1845, in Northampton county, Pa. From thence they moved to Stevenson county, Ill., in 1855, and agains to Story county, Ia., near Colo, on March 10, 1865, where they have resided for the past thirty years. Of the seven children born to them, six are now living and all were privileged to be present at the last services. Mrs. Smith has been a member of United Evangelical Church for many years, and lived a devoted, humble Christian life. The last service was held on Monday June 29, at 2 p. m., in the United Evangelical Church in Colo, the pastor, Rev. Pickford, speaking from the text chosen before her death--2Tim. 4:7,8. Revs. Wilkins, of Colo, and Skogsburg, of Zearing, assisted in the service. A large congregation was present to extend sympathy and respect tothe memory of the departed, and to comfort the bereft ones.
We desire to thus return our thanks to the many friends for their kindness, love and sympathy, shown us during the sickness and at the death of our loving companion and mother.

A tribute of love was seen at the cemetery of Monday last, where the grave of Mrs. Ruben Smith was lined with flowers and sprigs of evergreen all over the interior sides of the grave. It surely shows that love moves the human heart deeper than all else.
