From Story County Watchman April 12, 1895

On Tuesday morning Philip Barry, who has been for some months past living with Mr. McCulley, just south of Gilbert, came down stairs before daylight and when the family came down was not to be found for some time. When discovered he was found in a well near the barn. It looks as though he had removed couple of the boards from the cover, then shot himself with a revolver and then fell into the water where he was found. The proper officers were notified and the remains cared for by undertaker Loud, of Ames. He was about 40 years of age, and a cousin of the parties where stopping. No reason is known for the act.
