Cambridge Press: ....The community was thrown into a fever of excitement early Sunday afternoon when the word was quickly passed around that Ed Kaness had received a terrible wound from a shot-gun. The unfortunate boy had been residing at the home of L. H. Beckley, and his older brother, Walter, at Robert Lee's, and it seems they had planned a trip on foot to their uncle's, George Kaness, who lives near Evergreen church, and intended to take a shot-gun each and hunt on the way, which was mostly through the timber. As nearly as it known it was about 10 o'clock when they left Mr. Lee's and the accident must have happened between 11 and 11:30. Just how it came to pass will never be known, as Walter was some distance from the scene, but it is believed that he was moving the weapons across a large log, and that the hammer was accidentally pulled back, and being released exploded the cap, and caused the load to be discharged. Walter at once brought some water in his hat and ran for help, but no one was at home. He found a pail and carried water to the wounded boy, thn ran first to Mr. Monetz' and then to J. S. Nelson's no one being home at either place. He then went to A. W. Southwicks arriving at 12-10. Albert at once hitched a team to a double buggy and drove as near as possible to the spot where Ed. was sitting. He was carried in a quilt to the buggy and bro't to town as rapidly as possible as his condition would permit. More than two hours must have passed fromthe time of the accident till medical help was secured during which time the would bled profusely, and the wonder is that consciousness was retained so long. The funeral was held in the M. E. church Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 7, 1894, at 2 o'clock, Clarence King officiating, after which the body was laid to rest in the Cambridge cemetery.....
