From Story County Watchman July 14, 1893

Died, Sunday morning at eleven o'clock, John M. Hammit, aged 55 years and 6 months. Mr. Hammit enlisted in the Union army June, 1861, and was wounded in his thigh at the battle of Belmont the same year.
