John E. McNichols, a former resident of this county died the first of the week at his home near O'Neil, Neb., after a short illness. He was a brother of M. McNichols, of Milford, and was well known in this section.

OBITUARY--John J. McNichols--Died at the residence of his son John at O'Neil on Saturday, June 4th, Mr. John J. McNichols, aged 58 yr. The deceased has been sick about four weeks, but was not considered in a dangerous condition until about a week ago. When taken sick he was perparing to move out on his farm, having rented his residence in town. It was an attack of erysipelas, which in time affected the entire system, finally going to the brain.--Mr. M. realized for several days he was going to die, and was resigned. His wife and twelve children--nine sons and three daughters, ranging in age from 12 years to 30--surrounded the bedside when the final summons came and it was with perfect consciousness that the husband and father looked upon his family a fond farewell. It was the first time in 8 years that they have all been to gether, and it is somewhat remarkable that so large a family could be summoned together to soothe the last moments of a dying parent. All but one, however, lives in this locality. A son, James, arrived from Colorado on Friday evening.

Mr. McNichols was born in Ireland, removing to America and settling in Syracuse, N. Y., when 24 years of age. In 1856 to Wisconsin, in 1875 to Iowa, and to this place two years ago. Always industrious Mr. M. manged to bring up his large family respectably and with good common educations, and at the same time acumutlating considerable property. During his residence and his kindly presence among us will be sadly missed. All knew him and appreciated his genial greetings and neighborly actions. The funeral occured this forenoon, the ceremonies being conducted at the Catholic church, of which he was an ardent member, and was attended generally by the people of the town and country surrounding. Peace to the ashes of a kind husband, indulgent father, enterprising citizen and good neighbor.--O'Neil, Neb. Free Press June, 7th.
