FUNERAL OF PIONEER HELD
Mrs. Hoskins laid to rest on Tuesday
The funeral services from Mrs. Sarah Hoskins, 86 who passed away at her home on Eighth Street, Sunday, were held from the Evangelical church Tuesday at 11 o'clock after which the body was taken to the Iowa Cemetery for interment.
Mrs. Sarah Ann Hoskins, pioneer of Story County, died at her home in Nevada at 5 o'clcok Sunday morning, Jan 11, 1925, having reached the age of 86 years, 7 months and 21 days.
She was born May 20, 1838, at Burgettstown, Washington, Penn. Here she lived until 1848 when the family moved to Muskingdom county, Ohio, where she grew to womanhood. In 1855 she married to Oliver Hoskins. With her husband and father's family, she came to Iowa in a covered wagon, requiring 49 days to make the trip to Saylorville, Polk County, near Des Moines. During one and one half years' residence here they experienced all the hardships and difficulties of pioneer life. In the spring of 1857 both families came to Story county and purchased the old Whitaker homestead 6 miles south of Nevada. Later she and her husband moved to their own farm where she lived for 63 consecutive years. She made her home in Nevada since 1920.
To Mr. and Mrs. Hoskins, five children were born, 3 daughters and 2 sons. They are Eliza Jane, Henry, Samuel, Julia and Elva. The first three died in youth; Julia, wife of W. F. Stratton, died in 1890 and Elva wife of Lem Oxley, died in 1913. Father and children preceded the mother to the spirit realm and she had been patiently and anxiously waiting to join them. Ida Whitaker, a niece was taken into her home in infancy and given a tender mother's care until she had a home of her own.
Mrs. Hoskins had been in failing heath for some months but was confined to her bed only for the past few weeks, while she patiently awaited the call from her master. She leaves to mourn her departure 2 son-in-laws, three grandsons, besides a host of friends and neighbors who will greatly miss "Aunt Sarah".
