OBITUARY

DEATH OF JOHN LAWMAN

Mr. John Lawman, one of the old and most highly respected citizens of the county, died at his home in this city, Monday afternoon, January 29th, 1906, at the advanced age of 80 years, 8 months and 17 days. Mr. Lawman had for some time been failing rapidly, and for the past few weeks his condition had been such that his death was really looked for sooner than it actually occured. He was a man of strong construction and proved to have great tenacity of life; but the end of his stuggle was for some time apparent, and death finally brought him release from suffering. Mr. Lawman was an Englishman, and he was born in Long Newton, England, in May 1825. He grew up and married there and emigrated to this country with such family as he then had in 1857.* He lived first in Wisconsin and came to Story county about 1876. He settled on the farm in Richland township, which was home for many years; but about ten years ago he moved to Nevada, where he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Lawman was a man of most estimable qualities, a kind and loving husband and father and an upright citizen. He leaves, besides his widow, seven children, Mrs. J. E. Brooks, Mrs. Nathan Kelley, Mrs. J. T. Handsaker, his son Thomas, Mrs. Frank A. Boynton, Mrs. John O'Donnell, and Miss Isabel, all of this city or county except Mrs. Kelley and the son, who reside at or near Swea City.

The funeral was conducted this forenoon from the Lutheran church by Rev. J. O. Simon; and the interment was in the Nevada cemetery.

* Submitter's note: According to census information, Mr. Lawman reported he immigrated in 1855. Also, not mentioned in this article is the name of the widow, Violet (Elliott) Lawman. I have also found evidence that they actually married in New York.
