Joseph Lafayette Hidy was born near Washington court house, Fayette Co., Ohio, November 29, 1825. He went to the common schools of that day and when eighteen years of age, went to what was called a select school and graduated in two years, after which he spent several years teaching in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa. In April 1852, he was married to Joanna Janes at Jeffersonville, Ohio. In 1856 he came overland to Iowa and settled in the southeastern part of this county. To Mr. and Mrs. Hidy were born five sons all of whom are living, Viz: A. W. Hidy of Fort Scott, Kansas, W. C. of this city, G. H. of Kansas City, Mo., and J. C. and E. L. of Collins.

Mr. Hidy departed this life Sunday morning, February 11, 1906, at the home of his son, W. C. Hidy in this city, at the age of eighty years, two months and thirteen days. His wife preceded him nearly three years ago. J. L. Hidy was always of a religious turn of mind and of a progressive nature. He at an early age embraced Universalism, later joined himself to the Christian branch of the religious world, and was always reaching out for what seemed to him to be more light. In 1871 he with his companion united with the Reorganized Church of the Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints of which church he was a faithful member at the time of his death. In the death of Mr. Hidy Story county had lost one of its pioneer citizens.

The funeral was held at Collins on Tuesday afternoon. The sermon being preached by Elder W. C. Nirk of Rhodes, one of his old time friends, his remains were laid by the side of those of his wife in the Collins cemetery.
